In order to stay consistent, you have to...well...BE CONSISTENT...
That said, I Am HAPPY to present my FOURTH video this year but the FIRST from my New project.
Incisive ft Julian Marley & Dionne Reid : Winners
There's quite a lot to be said about this one to be honest....if you haven't got time, just watch the video...but if you want to know its background...read on.
Let me start from the top. It was produced by my longtime collaborator TE1 (He also produced This Groove, Where is he, Nothing Compares etc) and I personally think he got the vibe PERFECT!!
I wanted a reggae sort of feel....authentic.
He wanted to go with a sample based tune.
I didn't want to use samples (as usual) because of the admin/clearance issues when you want to release the record properly.
So we compromised. I called in a good friend of mine Obenewa for a session who laid down some AMAZING vocal ooohs and aaghhs that TE1 was able to chop and cut up, and use in a sample style...we sampled ourselves.
For the song...I really hate studios. As in, writing and CREATING in the studio. I prefer to just deliver an already written piece as most studios are sooo uninspiring...no windows....dead sound. Its weird. So...I sat with the beat in my bedroom, looked out of the window, and just thought about life....no surprises why the first lines of the song were "Look out the window...."
THEN for the chorus, I KNEW it had to be big....my manager Reggie Kerr had a relationship with Julian Marley and somehow the stars aligned. He was in the country for a short space of time, heard the record with my verse on it and liked it...
So on the day I had the studio session with him, I was watching a lot of reggae youtube videos to really catch a vibe and noticed a lot of the great artists perform with backing singers...normally three POWERful singers that hit those harmonies PERFECTLY....
I remember in my house with Shakka at the time and not long before, seeing Dionne Reids A64 which had a reggae feel to it. I said to Shakka in passing, "I wish I had called Dionne to come down to the session to really fill it out" knowing that it was too late and Julian wasn't exactly going to reschedule for lil old me!
..but Shakka being Shakka told me to just phone her..."just do it" he said lol. So I called Dionne and she had JUST finished work which happened to be 20 minutes from the studio and was ON IT. Stars alighned again...we got to the studio, and winners was born. Ive got studio footage so im sure you'll see that soon.
Hope you like the record...and the story behind it.
